Our Vision
Even in the incredibly supportive and sustainably-conscious community that we’re a part of, we get a lot of sideways glances when we talk about our vision. That vision includes not slaughtering roosters at birth, even when we have more than we need. It means letting all of our chicks grow into adult birds instead of grinding up unwanted day-old hatchlings, and finding intentional homes for adult birds we phase out of our breeding program. It’s a vision built on backbreaking work, blistered hands, and general crankiness in order to minimize the use of fossil fuels to grow medicinal herbs and healthy, hardy chickens sustainably. Sometimes it means working harder, not smarter. We rely on artisanal hand tools. We compost waste. We mulch to control weeds. We utilize no-till practices. Every day, we approach this land with reverence and a conviction to treat it like the life force it is.
Our vision is to grow food, flowers, and medicine with care and compassion for the many beating hearts and natural processes we are connected to on this little plot in the Champlain Valley. In doing so, we hope to leave this deeply rutted, weedy, clear-cut wetland meadow much better than we found it. Despite a brutal first year here, the improvements we’ve seen in the soil, water, insects, and wildlife passing through our land in just a single growing season has given us the energy to keep going, and our birds genuinely seem to love life here. When you buy our eggs and herbs, you’re not purchasing a product from an obscure, ethically dubious system; you’re supporting a community of flora, fauna, and farm critters we tend to with respect and concern day in and day out, and for that we thank you.
